In March of 2004, The Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) and Sweetwater International (SI) joined forces to improve small farmer agricultural production in economically depressed regions of rural Pakistan. OPIC is an agency of the United States Government whose mission is to mobilize and facilitate the participation of United States private capital and skills in the economic and social development of less developed countries and areas, and countries in transition from nonmarket to market economies. Together, OPIC and SI possess the essential skills, technology and resources for improving water and soil productivity on a sustainable basis, which are the cornerstones for increasing small-scale agricultural production and small farmer livelihoods.
