Queensland Gas Company (QGC) is pleased with early trial results on the Berwyndale South gas field in Australia after their first harvest of Mackay barley on a 20ha field using water from their coal seam gas extraction project. The water is loaded with salts and bicarbonates; however, with the use of the Sweetwater Solution™ (SS™), also known as “sulfur burner” technology that creates sulfuric acid on-site and on-demand, they are able to effectively neutralize the bicarbonates down to where the water can be effectively used to irrigate agricultural crops. Although the results of the trial will not be fully known for several years and after working with a variety of crops, QGC is optimistic as they continue to support and monitor this project. It would have been less expensive to just leave the water in evaporation ponds, but QGC is trying to do something good for the community by making this water available for irrigation and benefit the farmers nearby. Sulfur burner technology is helping to make this possible.
