The First Semi-Annual Technical Report of the ADB – IRRI Project, “Enhancing Farmer’s Income & Livelihood through Integrated Crop and Resource Management in the Rice-Wheat System in South Asia”, released in May 2006 states, “the future of [Pakistan’s] agriculture lies in the use of the Sulfurous Acid Generator (SAG) technology under the severe shortage of canal water and presence of saline – sodic soils.” Given the increasing demand on existing water supplies and the scarcity of high quality water many Pakistani farmers are being forced to use groundwater for irrigation purposes. The Sulfurous Acid Generator, now referred to as the Sweetwater Solution (SSTM), was donated for use in this project and has proven extremely effective in treating groundwater that is high in bicarbonates, carbonates and residual sodium content thereby making it suitable for agricultural use. Furthermore, by treating the water, soils that have been rendered less fertile due to the buildup of salts over time can be rehabilitated or reclaimed and in the process, agricultural yields can be significantly increased.
