Water treatment process Generally speaking, the water generated in the Coal Bed Methane (CBM) extraction process is extremely poor quality. It is often loaded with carbonates, bicarbonates, and sodium among other things. This water can often be treated with the Sweetwater Solution™ thereby making it suitable for agricultural use. However, typically, the water generated through CBM production is significantly worse than most irrigation water and will require larger volumes of SO2 treatment. As such, most installations will require multiple units to reduce the bicarbonate and carbonate levels sufficiently for the water to be safely used for agricultural purposes. Where soils are depleted of available calcium such as in Wyoming, appropriate amounts of soluble calcium are also added to help ensure that remaining salts do not get locked up in the soil profile.
